An Introduction to Acupuncture Therapy

Although acupuncture has been practiced for centuries, it is considered part of complementary and alternative medicine. The fact that it is among the oldest forms of medical treatment means it is really one of the most traditional medical treatments there is. The efficiency and ability to treat conditions of pain and symptoms caused by disease have been carefully and closely documented, with many successful outcomes. As with any form of medical treatment, whether natural or conventional or otherwise, it is important to understand the treatment, what to expect, how to incorporate it into your every day life, and the potential risks or side effects which could occur from improper practice.

Acupuncture uses stainless steel, hair-thin needles to stimulate body functions through pricking specific points on the body. Although needles are used, there is little to no pain involved from the actual acupuncture therapy and indeed, it has helped many a patient with pain management of arthritis and many more painful conditions. As with the use of any needles, sterilization is important and using unclean needles can result in a possible infection. Improperly using the needles by piercing too deep into the tissues can also result in negative consequences. These incidences are rare when acupuncture therapy is applied by a trained doctor. Beyond using clean equipment and following the proper procedures, there are nearly no other complications which can arise from acupuncture therapy.
